What is a Diamond Honing Gel?

Once you have sharpened your knife or cutting tool on one of our Extra-Fine Diamond Whetstones, during the first stage of the sharpening process, your knife will be extremely sharp. However, it won’t necessarily be Shaving Sharp, for that you will need remove the micro-burr that was formed during stage. Sharpening enthusiasts will always want to achieve the very sharpest cutting edge that they are able to create, and for this they will proceed to the second stage of the sharpening process. 

The second stage of the sharpening process creates the ultimate sharpness that it is possible to create, by polishing off the micro-burr that is always created at the cutting-edge apex of your knife. This second stage of the sharpening process is called ‘Stropping’, and stropping is best accomplished when a Strop, that is made from a piece of Leather, Cardboard, or something like a block of MDF or balsa wood for example, is coated with a very fine ‘Honing Compound’ such as Aluminium Oxide, Chromium or Silicon Carbide, however, the very best honing compound is made with Diamonds. A Strop that is coated with any form of Honing Compound ceases to be just a Strop and becomes a ‘Honing Strop’. 

To create a Honing Strop, you simply apply a very small amount of Diamond Honing Paste to the surface of your Strop and then gently polish the cutting-edge of your knife on that surface. Since your Strop or honing Strop is usually made from a soft material, such as leather, it is important that you only ever Strop your knife so that the cutting-edge trails behind the spine of the knife … in other word never push the cutting edge into the strop, unless you want to cut the strop’s surface and ruin it that is! 

Diamond Compounds, Gels & Pastes

Our Diamond Honing Compounds come in a variety of diamond Micron/Grit sizes ranging from 9 Microns (1,800 Grit) to 0.25 Microns (100,000 Grit) that are ideal for fast metal removal to superfine cutting-edge apex polishing.

Since all our Honing Compounds are a mixture of diamond powder and a specially formulated carrier gel, it is very easy to apply our Diamond Honing Gel to your strop and it requires little, to no, shaking to distribute the suspended diamonds evenly throughout the compound when it has been sitting on a shelf for a while. The diamond carrier gel is also specially formulated to firm up the Strop’s leather surface and body without causing damage its fibres, thus prolonging the life of the strop.

We know that there are any number of Diamond Honing Compounds that are available on the market, however, we stand behind our product, because we make our Diamond Honing Compounds with perhaps the highest concentration of the diamond powder there is. Our high diamond density Honing Gels will give you a more consistent, and faster, result compared to other pastes.

Why Diamonds?

Since Diamonds are the hardest natural substance known to man, they are used in the gemstone and jewellery industry to cut and then to polish … diamonds! This being the case, when diamonds are used to cut and then polish even the hardest of metals, such as Tungsten, Carbide, Titanium, Chromium and of course Tool Steel as well as Super-Steels, they will do so with less trouble than it takes to sand a piece of balsa wood with sandpaper! We can say that:

1. 1.     Diamonds are just about the only substance that can hone, and polish, these metals properly; whilst lesser honing, and polishing compounds, such as those made from Aluminium Oxide for example, are unable to even scratch some of these metals. As such, if something like an Aluminium Oxide honing paste is used as a honing compound on some knives, it can, ironically, damage the knife cutting apex, by abrading, or eroding the steel sub-straight, but not the Carbide or other hard metal particles.
2. 2.     Another thing to consider is that diamonds do not readily breakdown or crumble during the honing process, as do most other honing compounds, which drastically reduces the need to keep re-applying your Honing Compound to your strop, thus saving you gobs of money in the long run.

So, since Diamonds do not cause these two problems, it makes them the ideal abrasive to use in a Honing Compound.
