 This traditional ‘Flint and Steel’ fire starter is the ‘Hudson Bay Oval Fire Steel Striker’ that is designed and made by Beaver Bushcraft, based on the commonly used fire steel design created and traded by the Canadian ‘Hudson Bay Trading Company’ during the 17-18th century Canadian / American pioneering era.

 Flint and Steel strikers are ideal for keeping in a traditional style ‘Tinderbox’ or ‘Tinder Pouch’. They were, almost exclusively, used by our ancestors to create a fire, in for heating and cooking, whilst out in the wilds, or at home.

The steel was used by striking it against the edge of a piece super-sharp natural flint, or chert, to create sparks. With a deft hand, and a bit of luck, it was expected that at least one of the sparks produced would land in a piece of tinder that was held on the flint. This would then create a red-hot ember. The ember was then used to ignite a fire-lay, a pipe, a sulphur match, or a candle.

After a little practice this Traditional ‘Hudson Bay’ Oval Striker should become extremely easy to use.

It is ideal for practicing, and teaching, traditional spark-based fire lighting.

The classic ‘Hudson Bay’ Oval Striker is lightweight, well balanced and the ergonomic shape should make it easy to use with just small amount of practice.

This striker is an exceptional first time 'Flint and Steel Striker' and is ideal for all levels of experience, from beginner to expert.

All our strikers made from 4mm thick high-quality steel.

They are incredibly robust and will not break if accidentally dropped on a hard surface unlike many other strikers in the market.

Our Fire Steels have been specially designed to spark efficiently when using the correct striking technique, and that optimal spark generation can only really be achieved when using a new super sharp piece of flint, as well as some good quality, and dry tinder, such as Char Cloth, Amadou or Chaga.
